Mariners perfect mix: Hernandez strong on mound and Griffey homers in Seattle’s 6-2 win

Ken Griffey Jr. started what might be his final homestand with career homer No. 628, and Felix Hernandez added another strong effort to his AL Cy Young Award resume in the Seattle Mariners’ 6-4 win over the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night.

Griffey has been mostly evasive about his future plans following the end of the season, but the Mariners icon jolted the meager crowd that showed up on a chilly night with a three-run homer off Oakland starter Trevor Cahill in the fifth inning.

Cahill became the 406th different pitcher to give up a long ball to Griffey in his storied career. Cahill (10-13) was just 13 months old when Griffey smacked his first career homer off Eric King on April 10, 1989.

Griffey’s homer gave Seattle a 5-1 lead and was more than enough run support for Hernandez, who bolstered the best season of his young career on a night he didn’t have his best stuff.

Hernandez (18-5) struggled with his control, walking four and hitting two batters, but lasted 7 2-3 innings and improved to 7-1 since Aug. 1. He gave up seven hits, struck out four and threw a season-high 120 pitches in his next-to-last start of 2009.

Mark Lowe struck out Cliff Pennington to end the eighth after Hernandez loaded the bases with two outs. Seattle closer David Aardsma gave up a two-run single to Kurt Suzuki in the ninth, before getting the final two outs.

Oakland missed its opportunity to capitalize on Hernandez’s early struggles, failing to score with runners at first and second and no outs in the second, and with runners on second and third and two outs in the third.

Mark Ellis had an RBI single in the fourth, but the A’s left runners at second and third in that inning as well.

Hernandez is among the favorites for the Cy Young in the American League. For wins, he trails only CC Sabathia, who has 19, and his 2.48 ERA is second to Kansas City’s Zack Greinke (2.06).

Hernandez will start Sunday in the season finale against Texas.

Japan celebrates Ichiro’s record

Ichiro Suzuki’s latest record-setting moment stirred up a new wave of national pride in his native country, as Japanese peers and fans alike saluted the baseball icon of two hemispheres.

From home run king Sadaharu Oh to office workers, people in Tokyo were stirred up by Suzuki claiming a ninth consecutive season with 200 hits, breaking the 108-year-old record he had shared with Willie Keeler on Sunday.

As reported by The Associated Press, one newspaper, the Yomiuri Shimbun, published a special edition headlined, “Ichiro breaks Major League record.”

Stamp of approval awaits Ichiro

A stamp of approval from his country awaits Ichiro when he collects his 200th hit of the season. Several stamps, actually. According to Kyodo News, the Japan Post Group will issue commemorative stamps featuring Ichiro when he records his Major League-record ninth consecutive 200-hit season, To be issued by Japan Post Network Co., the postal service arm of the Japan Posts Group, the stamp set — a sheet containing 10 ¥80 stamps, nine postal cards and a stamp holder — will be priced at ¥3,980, including shipping fees — about $43.00 U.S.

Post offices throughout Japan will accept advance orders for the stamps, beginning on the day after Ichiro’s 200th hit through Oct. 30.

Going into tonight’s game against the Angels, Ichiro ihas 196 hits this season and is on the verge of reaching another milestone. He reached the 2,000-hit mark on Sunday against the Athletics in Oakland.

But 200 would be a “bigger” number because no one in MLB history have had nine consecutive 200-hit seasons and only one other player, all-time hits leader Pete Rose, had more — 10.

Carp ready for second go-around

The first stint first baseman Mike Carp had with the Mariners this season was more of a get-acquainted period than anything else.

He had eight at-bats during the 16 days he spent with the team in June and July, playing in five games and getting three hits and one RBI in very limited duty.

Carp returned to Triple-A Tacoma on July 4, took a couple of days to regroup, and then got his swing back, helping the Rainiers get back into the Pacific Coast League pennant race. The race goes on without Carp as he rejoined the Mariners on Tuesday when big league rosters could be expanded.

Griffey out with left knee inflammation

Ken Griffey Jr. had an MRI exam on his left knee Tuesday afternoon to determine the extent of the discomfort that has kept him out of the lineup for the past five games.

The results showed inflammation, and Griffey should be ready to resume action on Thursday night when the Mariners open a four-game series against the Athletics in Oakland.

“He’s had some pain in this particular spot and he hadn’t had it there in a while,” manager Don Wakamatsu said. “It just showed up again.”

The 39-year-old Griffey had surgery on the knee last October.
